Shortlist
'Acceptable
In The 80s'
Calvin Harris
Ubiquitous launch single for a proper popstar. Interesting fact: this
isn’t actually a foreign language release – Calvin is simply
‘Scottish’!
'Rehab'
Amy Winehouse
Readers of The Sun might forget that as well as enjoying the occasional
beverage Amy Winehouse has a day job inventing amazing pop singles like
this iconic release.
'Beware
Of The Dog'
Jamelia
Barely spluttered into the Top Ten for one inexplicable reason or another
but sounds like a Number One single to this very day.
'Catch
You'
Sophie Ellis-Bextor
A stylish and atmospheric comeback single, this stalkers’ anthem
also earns a place on this year’s shortlist for Cathy Dennis.
'Don't
Give It Up'
Siobhan Donaghy
Siobhan Donaghy's glorious return established her as 2007’s leftfield
popstar of choice with this spooky, orchestral and twisted pop single.
'Foundations'
Kate Nash
Kate’s second single saw the chirpy popstrel ditching nonsense like
'Caroline Is A Victim' in favour of an amazing proper pop single.
'Overpowered'
Roisin Murphy
A complete commercial disaster but a meticulously crafted pop single whose
sound and attendant ‘media tools’ (ie the video) are bursting
with creativity.
'She's
Madonna'
Robbie Williams
In twenty years’ time people will still be listening to 'Angels'
on Christmas Day in spite of the fact that this is clearly a million times
better.
'Shine'
Booty Luv
Hoovering up a remix of an old Luther Vandross non-hit probably wasn't
Nadia or Cherise’s idea but we don’t mind if they take the
credit.
'Something
Kinda Oooh'
Girls Aloud
The best Girls Aloud single post-'Biology’ taking in tutus, kinks
in steel (cue Ray Davies in full body armour) and ‘backrooms’
(ie bumholes probably ).
'Stop
Me'
Mark Ronson
Puts a trumpet-shaped Whoopee Cushion under Morrissey’s bottom,
then goes really gay at the end with a bit of Diana Ross.
'Yeah
Yeah'
Bodyrox feat Luciana
It's a bit of a racket but so is 'Bohemian Rhapsody' except 'Bohemian
Rhapsody' is a load of overblown rubbish and ‘Yeah Yeah’ is
not.
