Alcazar are, somewhat unexpectedly and with a slightly different lineup, back. 'We Keep On Rockin'' is their new single and goes to Swedish radio today.
It is a song about roughly nothing and whether you consider that to be a good or a bad thing probably has some root in how many Portishead albums you own. It might be something of a stretch to say that Alcazar have reinvented their sound for this — the melodrama and disco nonsense is all very much present and correct — but it does also sounds fairly fresh, which is good news.
There are four or five points in the song which stand out as major obstacles to 'We Keep On Rockin'' being a work of solid pop genius but 'We Keep On Rockin'' is a pretty great celebration of big stupid pop music and should provide you with a great safehouse if you're not happy about the way pop music is evolving. It's basically quite listenable.
That 'listenable' point only stands if you just listened to the above clip. And the funny thing is that if you didn't listen to the above clip but for some reason chose to continue reading to this point, you could actually have finished listening to the 30 second clip by now. Although you might not have quite got to the chorus yet. But you might have got to it now. Or now. Or maybe now. And if you haven't heard it yet you will have heard it… Now.
