Jorge Drexler — ‘Uruguay nomas’
“'Horriblemente lenta' according to one punter, this is a pretty melancholy World Cup song. And for a side spearheaded by Luis Suarez it more than lacks a little bite. Jorge predicts that Uruguay will 'steal a kiss at the Maracana' over a Nando's‑lite instrumental so nonchalant that it comes off sounding smug. I did however back 'La Celeste' at 28/1 with SkyBet, so I hope he's right. Towards the end of the track his children join in on the chorus, which is nice. The writer performer Jorge Drexler has won an Oscar and is also an ENT doctor. So he's basically a great guy. In fact, it's a rather sweet song and particularly poetic for a football song.”
Gandhi — ‘Ciclos’
“This moves between sounding like Toploader, Santana and a little bit of Nickleback, but it's a sufficiently watered down version of all those things to just be super nondescript Latin pop music. A while ago I had dinner with a Multi-Latin-Grammy award winning artist but had no idea at the time. I checked out the discography after our wine and meatballs and I was astonished that this stuff could sell by the million. In the video for 'Ciclos', the band are impersonating scientists/vets/doctors, which seems to be the final nail in the coffin as the Uruguayan guy is actually a real doctor."
