Fans of owning music look away now: digital downloads have hit an eight-year low in the US, while streaming, as you might expect, has hit an all-time high.
For the week ending August 27, Billboard reports that 15.66m digital songs were sold in the US, the lowest weekly total since the week ending December 9 2007 when 15.64m downloads were 'shifted'.
In that same August sales frame, streaming via Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube etc (poor Tidal) reached an all-time high of 6.6 BILLION, which is literally quite a lot.
It's also the first time since December 2006 that the highest-selling single in the US has sold fewer than 100,000 copies, while digital sales in general are 10% down on this time last year.
